Massachusetts passes legislation licensing naturopathic quackery. Only the governor can stop it now. If there’s anything that characterizes naturopaths in their pursuit of legitimacy and licensure, it’s an amazing relentlessness. In this, they are not unlike The Terminator. As Kyle Reese described him in the first Terminator movie, the Terminator “can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. Medical Dark Ages Quotes. By Wade Frazier. Revised in July 2014. TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH WITH THE LIVER AND GALLBLADDER MIRACLE CLEANSE Most people unknowingly suffer from a dangerous buildup of gallstones in the liver and. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop. Over the years, I’ve written about attempts by naturopaths to obtain licensure in various states, including my own. I noted last summer that one state, Massachusetts, had taken a large step forward in licensing the quackery that is naturopathy with the passage by its Senate of S. As Jan Bellamy noted at the time, this was, by her count, the eleventh legislative session in which a naturopathic practice bill had been introduced. Alarmingly, she also noted that a bill actually passed one year, “thanks to some questionable legislative shenanigans at the end of session,” but, fortunately, it was vetoed by the governor. Unfortunately, what happened before has happened again in Massachusetts. A measure that emerged in the waning moments of the last legislative session this week would create a state licensing board for naturopaths — alternative medicine practitioners whose work is considered unproven and potentially dangerous by physician leaders but is defended as a helpful option by adherents. If Governor Charlie Baker signs the bill into law, he will end a two- decade effort by naturopaths to obtain the legitimacy, oversight, and protection of having a professional license. Massachusetts would join 1. Washington, D. C., in licensing naturopaths, including all bordering states except Rhode Island. Amy Rothenberg, president of the Massachusetts Society of Naturopathic Doctors, cheered the vote as a victory for public health. She said the bill, if enacted, will protect patients from inadequately trained naturopaths who engage in dangerous practices, such as attempting to cure a patient of cancer with herbs and vitamins.“We’ll be able to offer quality naturopathic medicine to the citizens of Massachusetts, where we will have both the protection of the law and also regulation,” Rothenberg said. How it passed is a bit of a mystery to me. I don’t claim to understand how the Massachusetts legislature works. Getting Rid of Warts. 6/19/2016: Last year in November I was going through your website and came across so many stories in which apple cider had helped them to get.Is there an arthritis diet? The bill, if signed by the governor, would grant naturopaths a wide scope of practice, including. Section 2. 66. Naturopathic doctors shall be mandated reporters as required of physicians and nurses. Not surprisingly, many of them offer homeopathy, because you can’t have naturopathy without homeopathy. There was also the usual assortment of naturopathic quackery, including devices that resemble more than anything else Scientology e- meters, hyperbaric oxygen, immersion baths, footbath detoxification, and a lot more. It’s basically par for the course, the sort of nonsense I see any time I examine what naturopaths are doing. Now here’s the funny thing. This bill, if signed by the governor, doesn’t actually require naturopaths to be licensed. Knowing how contentious various certifications, such as board certification, I can guess what happened here. Naturopaths who didn’t go to the “approved” schools of naturopathy raised a stink, as did other “natural health practitioners.” They didn’t want to risk being shut out of practicing all that lucrative woo. So, likely as a sop to them, the senate included this provision. You just can’t call yourself a naturopath any more. I do have to hand it to the naturopaths. This is an excellent means of protecting their turf against other quack specialties. There are a lot of people out there calling themselves “naturopaths” who got their degrees through mail order schools or schools even less reputable than the “approved” schools of naturopathy out there. Licensure prevents those “practitioners” from calling themselves naturopaths. Of course, naturopaths think that they are somehow protecting the public from “lesser” trained naturopaths, but in reality, given how much pseudoscience is inherent in naturopathy, there really isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between a “licensed” naturopath and the naturopaths who won’t be able to be licensed under this law. Any bill like this requires a credulous legislator to champion it, and the Massachusetts law is no different. Representative Jay R. Kaufman, Democrat of Lexington and a top proponent of licensing naturopaths, said the medical society has been “incredibly slow to appreciate the qualifications as well as the experience of folks who are alternative medicine practitioners.”Years ago, Kaufman served on a legislative commission on naturopathy, which he said concluded that naturopathic practices and those of conventional medicine “had very comparable levels of credibility and scientific accuracy.”“A broader array of options just means that overall health care of citizens of the Commonwealth will improve,” he predicted. Rothenberg, of the Massachusetts naturopathic society, said responsible naturopaths work in concert with medical doctors and know when to refer cases to them. Oncologists often refer patients to her to help with the side effects of cancer treatment, she said. Regular readers who look at her case will recognize a typical alternative medicine cancer cure testimonial in which she underwent conventional therapy plus naturopathy but attributes the naturopathy for how well she’s doing. Everything Rothenberg subjected herself to is pure quackery that added nothing to her care. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are what cured her, not the intravenous vitamin infusions (I’m guessing she was into high dose vitamin C), the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, and the enzyme therapy. In Kaufmann, Rothenberg and her fellow naturopaths have found a willing dupe. Let’s also not forget another great benefit to naturopaths of licensure: Reimbursement by insurance companies. Licensure makes it far more likely that insurance companies will reimburse naturopaths for their services. The only hope now to protect the citizens of Massachusetts from the legalization of quackery is for the governor to veto the bill. This happened in 2.

Besides being fast and easy to prepare, they're also a good source of protein for people with prediabetes. And while you may be nervous about the cholesterol, research shows that in the context of a healthy diet, eating eggs doesn't have a negative effect on your heart health. Fish will help safeguard your ticker, important since having prediabetes puts you at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Whole grains are also important: One 2. Quinoa, wild rice, and farro are a few whole grains, but barley is especially great, as it contains a fiber called beta glucan that's especially helpful for insulin. Keep your portion to a half to one cup, advises Weisenberger. It's really scary. For one, slices are rich in saturated fat, which can impair insulin sensitivity, plus a portion packs 2. Weisenberger also isn't a fan of the other side of the spectrum: fat- free desserts like sorbet or frozen yogurt. In addition, nuts like almonds are linked to better heart health, says Weisenberger. Need more reasons to eat dessert? Day Reset Autoimmune Diet Plan. For many years I suspected that I had some form of thyroid problem based on my own research and symptoms like dry skin, occasional fatigue, trouble losing weight after having a baby, and hair thinning, but I was never able to get answers from conventional tests which showed that my T3 and T4 thyroid hormones were in the normal range. Thankfully, I found an amazing doctor who specializes in hormones and endocrine problems and with additional blood testing and a thyroid ultrasound, he was able to finally figure out what I was struggling with: Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (an autoimmune condition where the body creates antibodies to the thyroid). What are Autoimmune Problems? It turns out that many different disorders and diseases are autoimmune in nature but they manifest in different ways. As the Paleo Mom explains: Autoimmune disease is caused by the immune system losing the ability to differentiate proteins belonging to your own body with proteins belonging to a foreign invader (like a bacteria, virus or parasite). What causes symptoms is the build up of damage to cells, tissues and/or organs in the body–damage caused by your own immune system attacking those cells. Which proteins/cells are attacked is what separates once disease from another. In Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, the thyroid gland is attacked. In Rheumatoid Arthritis, the tissues of your joints are attacked. In psoriasis, proteins within the layers of cells that make up your skin are attacked. However, the root cause is the same. Genetic predisposition to autoimmunity makes up about one third of your risk of developing an autoimmune disease. The other two thirds of your risk come from environmental factors, which include: diet, lifestyle, infections (both prior and persistent) exposure to toxins, hormones, weight, etc. While you cannot control your genetics or whether or not you had mono as a kid, you do have an immense amount of control over your diet and lifestyle (and the extent that these affect hormones and weight and even toxin exposure). By removing the foods that contribute to a leaky gut, gut dysbiosis (the wrong numbers, relative quantities, or types of microorganisms typically growing in the wrong locations in your gut), hormone imbalance, and that stimulate inflammation and the immune system, you can create the opportunity for your body to heal. By addressing important lifestyle factors and changing your focus to eating nutrient- dense foods that support optimal gut health (and optimal health of your gut microorganisms), that restore levels of important nutrients and provide all of the building blocks that your body needs to heal and properly regulate the immune system, that help resolve inflammation and support organ function, you create an environment in your body conducive to healing. Why Other Diets May Not Work. From my understanding, once the body has an autoimmune reaction, it can sometimes be necessary to remove a wide variety of potentially inflammatory foods for a short time and then reintroduce to test the response. The idea is similar to the theory behind the GAPS protocol but geared toward addressing autoimmune issues instead. Since the body is in a state of heightened immune response, removing these foods can help it get back into a state of balance and reduce the autoimmune reaction. Technically, an autoimmune disease cannot be “cured”, but in many cases, it is possible to put the condition into remission with careful diet and lifestyle changes. My Experience. I switched to an autoimmune protocol diet after being diagnosed with Hashimotos in hopes of giving my immune system a little time to recover. I was hopeful that it would be beneficial, but I was AMAZED at how quickly it helped. Within the first week, I saw my bloating go away, my thyroid nodule felt noticeably smaller, I had more energy (after the first couple of days), and my skin improved. Over the course of the almost two months I did the strict protocol, I lost some of my stubborn weight and felt incredibly better. It also helped me identify foods that I was not responding well to, but that I didn’t realize were problematic (like eggs, which was confirmed by blood test later). I was able to reintroduce many of the foods after that time without a problem and I felt continually better (until I created a flare by not sleeping and stressing about finishing my book). Sleep and stress are both huge factors in overall health and are especially important for those with any kind of health condition. The Specifics of the Autoimmune Diet. The general idea of the autoimmune diet is that you are removing any potentially inflammatory foods, but the specifics are a bit more difficult. Some sources consider foods like fruit and sweet potatoes ok, while others do not. For reference, some sources that I find most helpful are: This particular post from the Paleo Mom is really helpful in understanding what foods are considered safe and which ones to temporarily avoid. I’ll also be posting more autoimmune friendly recipes and meal plans soon, but those are great resources for getting started. You can download the complete food list I used by clicking here (PDF). It can seem overwhelming, but this way of eating is actually relatively simple if you follow a template. My typical day on the autoimmune diet was: Breakfast– A scramble of meat and cooked vegetables, a cup of homemade bone broth, some fermented vegetables, and supplements. Lunch– A huge salad with leftover protein (meat, offal or fish) and a small piece of fruit, a cup of bone broth, fermented water kefir or kombucha and olives. Dinner– A stir fry with some type of protein (meat, offal, seafood) with a lot of vegetables and allowed spices, evening supplements and at least 1 cup of healthy starch like cooked winter squash, pumpkin, etc. I also made a lot of stuffed squashes and soups. We rely heavily on big salads, stir frys and casseroles while on the autoimmune diet. When I first started, it seemed like I couldn’t eat anything and I was depriving myself of everything, but it is important to remember that many times the body is deficient in certain nutrients because of an autoimmune disease so during the course of the 3. I focused on extensively nourishing my body with as many high quality proteins, vegetables and healthy fats as I could consume. I may have been tired of my food choices at times, but I certainly never went hungry. I also focused on consuming a TON of vegetables during this time, after talking to Dr. Terry Wahls and reading her book, The Wahls Protocol. Wahls emphasizes the importance of consuming at least 9 cups of vegetables a day, especially brightly colored vegetables, leafy greens, and onions and garlic. Other Factors. Diet is hugely important for all aspects of health, and for me, it became even more important after being diagnosed with autoimmune disease, but it is by no means the only factor. Personally, I found that these factors were equally important to recovery for me: Sleep. It is my nemesis. I love to stay up late and skimp on sleep so I can get more done. My body does not love this. I’ve found that when I sleep at least 8- 8. I see my health markers improve (blood tests, fasting blood glucose, etc). Stress reduction. Also a tough one for me, but stress can have as much of an impact as diet on gut health and hormone levels. I found that even with a good diet, I started to notice symptoms creeping back in while under the stress of finishing my book. Supplements. I hesitated to include this part because if diet, stress and sleep aren’t under control, this won’t help at all, but I found certain supplements helped tremendously once I had optimized other factors. I personally take: WP- Throid thyroid medication (under the care of my doctor), Betaine HCL with protein meals, 5- MTHF and Methyl- B1. Folate, Probiotics, Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Cortisol support, Omega- 3s, Vitamin D (and sunshine daily in the morning), Magnesium, L- glutamine, Gelatin, and Vitamin C. I would highly recommend seeing a good functional medicine doctor and finding out what you personally need before taking any supplements. Autoimmune Diet Encouragement. This diet is difficult. So is pregnancy. Sometimes the best things in life require some work and denial of self. An elimination diet is temporary and it gives you a window into your own body and what you need to eat for optimal health. Don’t let is cause you extra stress. Don’t let this keep you up at night. Try to focus on nourishing and loving your body and providing it with the building blocks it needs to function optimally. If you can, encourage a friend or family member to make the journey with you for support. If you’ve ever struggled with autoimmune issues, take 3. Do it with me! Let me know below what your struggle is and the results you see! FDA Probes Link Between Food Dyes, Kids' Behavior : NPR. Red #4. 0, Blue #1, Yellow #6 - a rainbow of food dyes. Artificial food dyes are made from petroleum and approved for use by the FDA to enhance the color of processed foods. They've been around for decades and are found in everything from pudding to potato chips to soft drinks. But recent studies linking food coloring to hyperactivity in kids is causing some experts to call on the FDA to ban foods containing them — or at least require a warning label. Christine Woodman of Fairfax, Va., first noticed her children were having trouble focusing on school projects and were acting way too reckless at home when they were in elementary school. Even though the low- fat craze has ended and more people are embracing healthy fats in their diet, there's still a sizable group that has not heard the news yet . READ ABOUT THIS INFOGRAPHICBut why? The infographic above does a great job of simplifying an otherwise complex concept, specifically the role of dietary carbs in increasing insulin levels and weight gain/obesity. I highly recommend reviewing it now . Unfortunately, the conventional medical wisdom has unwisely been extolling the virtues of carbohydrates for years, even placing them as the . If you are seeking to lose weight and optimize your health, foods like bread, rice and pasta should comprise very low percentages of your diet. Virtually anyone who bought into these high- carb, low- fat dietary recommendations has likely struggled with their weight and health, wondering what they're doing wrong. The problem is that overeating carbohydrates can prevent a higher percentage of fats from being used for energy, and lead to an increase in fat production and storage. It also raises your insulin levels, which in short order can cause insulin resistance, followed by diabetes. Insulin resistance is also at the heart of virtually every chronic disease known to modern man. Your Body Stores Excess Carbs as Fat Your body has a limited capacity to store excess carbohydrates.
This is one of the reasons why elevated blood sugar follows their overconsumption. The way it works is that any carbohydrates not immediately used by your body are stored in the form of glycogen (a long string of glucose molecules linked together). Your body has two storage sites for glycogen: your liver and your muscles. Once the glycogen levels are filled in both your liver and muscles, excess carbohydrates are converted into fat and stored in your adipose, that is, fatty, tissue. So, although carbohydrates are . Puffed rice, in fact, is capable of making your blood sweeter than white sugar, due to the fact that it is higher on the glycemic index – all the more reason why refined grains are . Any meal or snack high in carbohydrates will also generate a rapid rise in blood glucose. To adjust for this rapid rise, your pancreas secretes insulin into your bloodstream, which then lowers your levels of blood glucose. The problem is that insulin is essentially a storage hormone, evolved to put aside excess carbohydrate calories in the form of fat in case of future famine. So the insulin that's stimulated by excess carbohydrates aggressively promotes the accumulation of body fat! In other words, when you eat too much sugar, bread, pasta, and any other grain products, you're essentially sending a hormonal message, via insulin, to your body that says . This provides a major survival advantage - - but for nearly everyone reading this, having insufficient calories is not an issue, so this protective mechanism actually sabotages your health. Additionally, increased insulin levels also: Make it virtually impossible for you to use your own stored body fat for energy. Here's a scientific explanation for why. Why bacon is good for weight loss. Bacon is challenging the outdated idea that eating low. Bacon and Weight. Many people feel the need to lose weight. Suppress two important hormones: glucagon and growth hormone. Glucagon promotes the burning of fat and sugar. Growth hormone is used for muscle development and building new muscle mass. Increases hunger: As blood sugar increases following a carbohydrate meal, insulin rises with the eventual result of lower blood sugar. This results in hunger, often only a couple of hours (or less) after the meal, in a vicious endocrine rollercoaster that takes us from meal to compulsive meal without ever feeling satisfied. So, all in all, the excess carbohydrates in your diet can not only make you fat, they can make sure you stay fat. Cravings, usually for sweets, are frequently part of this cycle, leading you to resort to snacking, often on more carbohydrates. Not eating can make you feel ravenous shaky, moody and ready to . Ron Rosedale, the physician who first educated me about the importance of insulin, has used low- carb diets to treat his patients with obesity, diabetes and chronic diseases for over two decades. He argues that there is no such thing as a ? He believes consuming starches, especially potatoes and rice, will disrupt both your blood sugar and insulin levels - - the question is only a matter of to what degree? My guess is that from a biochemical perspective he is probably right, and if you need to lose weight, there is no question that limiting your sugar and starch intake is crucial. However, if living longer is not your primary objective and you are seeking to optimize fertility or athletic performance, then this most likely is not your best choice. That said, I realize that giving up virtually all non- veggie carbs can be a challenge . He also believes that 5. I keep very careful track of my diet with one of the best diet apps on the i. Pad (in my opinion) called Calorie Counter and Fitness Tracker. My guess is most people are not keeping such detailed records of what they eat. I typically have about 6. This amount is in line with Perfect Health Diet recommendations, but in my diet, most of the non- fiber carbohydrates are from veggies and about one cup of rice a day to help fill my glycogen stores that get depleted from my intense exercise regimen. If you are already healthy, are seeking to maximize your longevity and take it to the next level, and are willing to experiment then give Dr. Rosedale's suggestions a try by eliminating nearly all non- fiber carbs. This will be very challenging to implement in the beginning, but as your body grows accustomed and satiated from these extremely nutrient- dense low- carb foods, it should get much easier and will provide you outstanding health results that will be a continual source of encouragement. A Word about Fructose (a Common Sugar in Soda, Fruit Juice and More) . Furthermore, people consume fructose in enormous quantities these days, which has made the negative effects that much more profound. Without getting into the very complex biochemistry of carbohydrate metabolism, it is important to have a general understanding of how your body handles these sugars. Below is a summary of the main differences between glucose and fructose metabolism, which explains why I keep repeating that fructose is by far the worst type of sugar there is: After eating fructose, virtually all of the metabolic burden rests on your liver. But with glucose, your liver has to break down only 2. Every cell in your body, including your brain, utilizes glucose. Therefore, much of it is . By contrast, fructose is turned into free fatty acids (FFAs), VLDL (the damaging form of cholesterol), and triglycerides, which get stored as fat. The fatty acids created during fructose metabolism accumulate as fat droplets in your liver and skeletal muscle tissues, causing insulin resistance and non- alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Insulin resistance progresses to metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Fructose is the most lipophilic carbohydrate. In other words, fructose converts to activated glycerol (g- 3- p), which is directly used to turn FFAs into triglycerides. The more g- 3- p you have, the more fat you store. Glucose simply does not do this. When you eat 1. 20 calories of glucose, less than one calorie is stored as fat. Consuming fructose is essentially consuming fat! The metabolism of fructose by your liver creates a long list of waste products and toxins, including a large amount of uric acid, which drives up blood pressure and can cause gout. Glucose suppresses the hunger hormone ghrelin and causes resistance to leptin, which suppresses your appetite. Fructose has no effect on ghrelin and by interfering with your brain's ability to use leptin, results in overeating. If you want to shed excess pounds, maintain a healthy weight long- term, and RADICALLY reduce (and in many cases virtually eliminate) your risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer, then get serious about restricting your consumption of fructose to no more than 2. If you're already overweight, or have any of these diseases or are at high risk of any of them, then you're probably better off cutting that down to 1. If it is below 5 when you are eating loads of fruit then you are metabolically ok with it, as elevated uric acid levels are a strong indication of fructose toxicity. It's Time to Let Go of Your Fear of Fat. When you cut carbs, you need to replace those calories with healthy fats. Both are sources of energy, but healthy fats are far more ideal than carbs. However, not just any kind of fat will do. The Atkins Diet is one popular example of a low- carb, high- fat diet that has helped many shed unwanted pounds. Unfortunately, Dr. Atkins didn't pay much attention to the QUALITY of the fats, so while his recommendations worked in the short- term, many who tried it ended up experiencing long- term problems. Many do not realize this, but frequent hunger may be a major clue that you're not eating correctly. Not only is it an indication that you're consuming the wrong types of food, but it's also a sign that you're likely consuming them in lopsided ratios for your individual biochemistry. Fat is far more satiating than carbs, so if you have cut down on carbs and feel ravenous, thinking you . So go ahead and add a bit more healthy fats from the list below: Olives and Olive oil. Coconuts and coconut oil. Butter made from raw grass- fed organic milk. Raw nuts, such as, almonds or pecans. Organic pastured egg yolks. Avocados. Grass- fed meats. Palm oil. Unheated organic nut oils. Another healthful fat you want to be mindful of is animal- based omega- 3. Deficiency in this essential fat can cause or contribute to very serious health problems, both mental and physical, and may be a significant underlying factor of up to 9. As mentioned, emerging evidence actually suggests your diet should be at least half healthy fat, and possibly as high as 7. My personal diet is about 6. Drs. Jaminet and Rosedale agree that the ideal diet includes somewhere between 5. Age: The risk increases significantly after the age of 60 years; Sex: For every two women who get kidney cancer, 3 men will do so; Obesity: People with obesity have a. Overview of Vertigo. Eczema can show up as red, crusty patches on your baby's skin, often during their first few months. It’s common and very treatable. Many infants outgrow it. Not sure if your baby's itchy, irritated rash is eczema? Your doctor can tell you for sure. These questions and answers can help you understand what to look for. What Does Baby Eczema Look Like? It shows up as patches of red or dry skin. The skin is almost always itchy and rough, too. Babies can get the condition just about anywhere on their body. Most often, it affects their cheeks and the joints of their arms and legs. It’s easy to confuse baby eczema (also called infant eczema or atopic dermatitis) with cradle cap. But there are some key differences. Cradle cap is much less red and scaly. It generally clears up by 8 months, and usually appears on the scalp, sides of the nose, eyelids and eyebrows, and behind the ears. Causes. It can run in families. If Mom or Dad has eczema, a baby is a lot more likely to get it, too. Problems in the skin barrier, allowing moisture out and germs in, could also be a cause. Eczema happens when the body makes too few fatty cells called ceramides. If you don’t have enough of them, your skin will lose water and become very dry. Does Baby Eczema Go Away by Itself? It often does. Most children outgrow it before they start school. It’s not common, but some kids will have eczema into adulthood. They may have times - - even years - - without the symptoms. But they may still tend to have dry skin. Continued. What Can Make It Worse. Each baby is different. But there are some common eczema triggers to avoid, including: Dry skin . It can make a baby more itchy. Low humidity, especially during winter when homes are well- heated and the air is dry, is a cause. Irritants. Think scratchy wool clothes, polyester, perfumes, body soaps, and laundry soaps. These can all trigger symptoms. Stress. Children with eczema may react to stress by flushing. That can lead to itchy, irritated skin. And that, in turn, ramps up their eczema symptoms. Heat and sweat. Both can make the itch of infant eczema worse. Allergens. It’s not certain, but some experts believe that removing cow’s milk, peanuts, eggs, or certain fruits from a child’s diet may help control eczema symptoms. Remember that your baby can get exposed to these foods if Mom eats them before she breastfeeds. Home Treatment. Give your little one's skin some TLC. That’s the first step in treating their eczema. Try: Moisturizers. One with ceramides is the best option. These are available over the counter and by prescription. Otherwise, a good moisturizer, fragrance- free cream, or ointment such as petroleum jelly, when used several times daily, will help your baby's skin retain its natural moisture. Apply immediately after a bath. A lukewarm bath. This hydrates and cools the skin. It may also ease itching. Make sure the water isn’t too hot! Keep the bath short - - no more than 1. To soothe itchiness even more, you could try adding oatmeal soaking products to your baby's tub. Use mild, unscented body and laundry soaps. Perfumed, deodorant, and anti- bacterial soaps can be rough on a baby's sensitive skin. Clean carefully. Use soap only where your baby may be dirty, such as the genitals, and hands and feet. Simply rinse off the rest of your child's body. Dry off. Pat skin dry. Don't rub. Moisturize. Smooth one on while your baby's skin is wet. Dress for comfy days. To avoid the irritation of clothing rubbing on the skin, your child should wear loose clothes made of cotton. Always wash new clothes before you put them on your baby. Use a mild, fragrance- free detergent. To keep your little one comfy, don’t overdress him or use too many blankets. If he gets hot and sweaty, that can trigger an eczema flare. Continued. What to Do About Itching. Try to keep your baby from scratching her itchy skin. Scratching can make the rash worse, lead to an infection, and cause the irritated skin to get thicker and more leathery. Trim her nails often, and then take the edge off of them with a file if you can. Some parents also slip . Others try long socks, tucked in under a long- sleeved shirt, so they're harder for a baby to remove. Medicines. Some over- the- counter products, such as hydrocortisone creams and ointments, target itching and inflammation. Check the instructions and don’t use them too long, or they can thin the skin in the affected area. There are also medicines that need a doctor’s prescription, if other treatments don’t work. When to Call a Doctor. Make the call if your baby’s eczema doesn’t begin to get better within a week of starting over- the- counter hydrocortisone creams. It may be time for a prescription medicine. Also check with your doctor if you notice yellow or light brown crust or pus- filled blisters appear on top of the eczema. This could be the sign of a bacterial infection that needs antibiotics. You should call your doctor if your baby is around anyone who has cold sores or genital herpes. Eczema can make your little one more likely to pick up those germs. Sources.
